Have you ever thought about how fast technology is advancing? There are new developments almost every other day. When we talk about technology the main thing that comes to mind is artificial intelligence. Now some people might ask what exactly A.I. is. It is the intellect and aptitude shown by machines. Obviously they are programmed like this by humans. Over recent years A.I. has been progressing rapidly. A.I. programmed machines are capable of doing more work without tiring and needing a break. Although it will make life far easier than before, all this is also creating uncertainty amongst humans. What does it mean for their careers? There is one thing that humans are much better at than machines and that’s emotional intelligence. Let’s take a closer look at both kinds of intelligence and find out how it might shape the world currently and in the future.
Difference between Artificial Intelligence and Humans
The core difference between A.I. and humans is that of multi-tasking. A.I. can have multiple functions programmed into the same machine. While humans have knowledge of multiple functions as well, they can’t work on multiple things at the same time. This doesn’t mean that machines will replace humans completely as we mostly see in movies. A.I. is meant to improve the efficiency of work for humans. The place where artificial intelligence controlled machines lack, in comparison to humans, is in the department of interacting and understanding. Although A.I. can analyze any data it collects to form suitable solutions but it can’t understand any new information that it picks up.
This doesn’t mean that machines will replace humans completely as we mostly see in movies.
The Role of Emotional Intelligence
Although artificial intelligence can recognize human emotions it can’t replicate them. Machines can’t empathize. Their analyzing skills are limited when it comes to human emotions. Where A.I. is better at repetitive tasks and tasks that are data-related, E.I. works with developing relationships and inspiring others. Humans are good with emotional intelligence. It comes naturally to them. That is why due to increasing advancements in artificial intelligence, it is predicted that in the future, human professions will be concentrated mostly in E.I. fields such as customer service. Humans are better at engagement related tasks, they can use their in-built emotional abilities to manage them in a great way. E.I. is especially important for leaders. Leaders with strong emotional intelligence are very necessary to lead their companies according to their vision in the fast-evolving world of today.
Although artificial intelligence can recognize human emotions it can’t replicate them.
The threats we face from A.I.
When talking about A.I. it is both a blessing and a threat to humans. Here are some of the threats we can face from the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence systems:
- Threat to our jobs
- Uninvited surveillance
- Applications of terrorism
- Creating fake content
We’ve discussed only one threat from A.I. so far which is how it can limit the jobs for humans. The advancement in A.I. has made machines more capable of performing jobs more accurately and faster than humans. This is why machines are replacing humans in many jobs and will continue to do so in the future.
The threat from A.I is not only limited to careers though. Another aspect of A.I. which we, humans, should be skeptical about is that of surveillance. With the improvements in A.I technology, it is becoming more capable of facial recognition, this means that we can be kept an eye on without our consent. You don’t have to be doing something wrong or fishy for this to make you uncomfortable. This surveillance has its advantages as well because it can help trace crimes and be used to witness and provide proof in cases that might have no other witnesses.
With the improvements in A.I technology, it is becoming more capable of facial recognition, this means that we can be kept an eye on without our consent.
A.I. can be used in terrorism too and that’s very dangerous for everyone. It can change the whole perspective on wars and the tensions between countries. Conflicts that use A.I. will have automatically programmed weapons at their disposal. Using A.I. in this aspect has the potential for far more destruction towards the attacked party and lesser towards the attacking party. It can also be difficult to keep track of such weapons and technology all over the world.
The advancements in A.I. make the creation of fake content very easy. Where before there were only fake picture creations, now A.I. makes it possible to create fake videos as well. Any video can be edited to place one person’s face onto another person’s body. This can then be used for blackmail or any other defamation motives.
How A.I. Improves Quality of Life
Till now we have only talked about how A.I. is a threat to us and our surroundings. Have you thought about the ways in which A.I. can be beneficial to us and our daily life? If used for good causes, artificial intelligence has a lot of potential to improve the quality of life for us. A.I. can be incorporated into our everyday tasks to make them automated. It can help us control many basic chores from the screen of our smartphone or through voice control, such as Alexa or Google Home. Even in the work-life, repetitive tasks can become boring for humans and may increase chances of negligence; A.I. can help there as it is free of human emotions and errors. There are many more ways A.I. can be used to help us in many different aspects of life but we won’t get into that for now.
Now that we have looked into both the sides of artificial intelligence and its possible utilization by humans, it is for you to determine whether A.I. is a blessing or a curse? As for me, I think it’s a bit of both but at the end of the day, it is for us humans to decide how we use this technology and what it means for us in the future. Now just go get it!
